Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) has gained significant attention in recent years for its effectiveness in treating various mental health challenges. It is a system of therapy originally designed by Marsha M. Lindehan, a psychology researcher at the University of Washington, designed to treat people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). DBT is a combination of mindfulness, standard cognitive-behavioural techniques for distress tolerance and concepts and skills for emotional regulation and interpersonal skills. Research has indicated that DBT is also effective in treating those with varied symptoms and behaviours associated with spectrum mood disorders including self-injury.

  1. Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a key component of DBT. Mindfulness originated and is rooted in Buddhism. It involves sustaining present attention in the moment and non-judgmentally observing one’s thoughts, feelings, and sensations. By practicing mindfulness, individuals can develop a greater awareness of their internal experiences and learn to accept and respond to them in a more skillful manner.
  2. Distress Tolerance: Distress tolerance skills help individuals cope with intense emotions and distressing situations without resorting to harmful or self-destructive behaviors. These skills include self-soothing techniques, distraction strategies, and acceptance of the current situation.
  3. Emotion Regulation: Emotion regulation skills focus on helping individuals identify and understand their emotions, as well as effectively manage and modulate them. By learning to regulate their emotions, individuals can reduce impulsive behaviors and make more balanced and thoughtful decisions.
  4. Interpersonal Effectiveness: Interpersonal effectiveness skills aim to improve communication, assertiveness, and relationship-building abilities. These skills help individuals navigate social interactions, set boundaries, and express their needs and wants in a healthy and effective manner.
